Cyprus has one of the worst trafficking records in Europe. It is high on the watch list for the US State Department, and former Minister of Justice, Doros Theodorou has defended this record by arguing, "the dream of 45% of women is to become prostitutes." Although the government of Cyprus has made several important steps towards abolishing trafficking-including implementing a national action plan and cracking down on visas-there are still not enough resources allocated towards the support of victims. Additionally, no extra resources have been earmarked for this cause in the action plan drafted earlier this year. It is irresponsible for the government to neglect this important step in combating trafficking.

The police readily acknowledge that current protection measures are weak, and the premises used as shelters are often unsuitable. Most importantly, the national action plan does not have specific guidelines for identifying victims-often excluding them from social support.  If the government takes the recommendations below (based on a report done by the Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies), it will go a long way towards providing the support victims need. We need your help! Urge President Christofias Demetris to fund social services for victims of trafficking.
