Are Robots the Future of Prostitution?
Published August 20, 2009 @ 02:00PM PT
A creative new solution has been proposed to the problem of tourists demanding commercial sex in areas where women are unwilling to supply it: let them do robots. Tourism futurologist Ian Yeoman has pointed out that the possibility of robots in service roles such as waiters is very real in the next 40 years, so why not robots as prostitutes?
Supposedly, these robo-women would not pass along diseases such as HIV and other STDs, and wouldn't pose the serious questions of ethics that prostitution with real women and girls involves. Unless, of course, you have concerns about paying for sex with an inanimate object, which is a whole other issue. In a way, robots would be the perfect prostitutes. They have no shame, feel no pain, and have no emotional or physical fall-out from the trauma which prostitution often causes. As machines, they can't be victims of human trafficking. It would certainly end the prostitution/human trafficking debate. But despite all the arguments I can think of for this being a good idea, I've gotta admit it creeps me out a little bit. Have we devalued sex so much that is doesn't even matter if what we have sex with isn't human? Has the commercial sex industry made sex so mechanical that it will inevitably become.... mechanical?
Maybe robo-prostitutes are just a concept developed by a "tourism futurologist," whatever that is. But maybe they're also a bit of a methaphor for how we expect women in prostitution to be today; we already see them as robots. Pimps and traffickers see them as money-making machines. Johns see them as instruments of pleasure. No one cares how they got into prostitution or why they stay- force, choice, deception, desperation. What matters is that once in prostitution, the industry treats women like non-humans. The commercial sex industry is not about individual women as people, it's about the revenue they generate. It's about their output. And the fact that they do feel shame and pain and trauma takes a backseat to their ability to make money or pleasure.
Maybe the future's not as far away as we think. Maybe it's already here.

Don't we already have inflatable dolls?
I would worry about it encouraging people to dehumanize sex. It's not just the harm to the prostitutes, it's also the attitude of the customers - I wouldn't want to encourage it.

Of course it dehumanizes sex. By definition. But perhaps for some men who are just not going to find a real sexual partner due to handicaps, etc., it might be better than nothing.
And when it happens, it will happen first in Japan. Bank on it.

I'm handicapped. Should I be paying for it?
I think suggesting that handicapped people pay for it dehumanizes them, too. They might be better off getting a cute puppy, for companionship, which is more important than sex if you have to choose.
I don't think it's ever ok to teach anyone to dehumanize others, for whatever reason.
No arguments on Japan.

According to the wikipedia article on "Dildo", women have been engaging in non-human sex for at least 30,000 years.

How about if the Robots start to develop feelings? Now, we are oppressing them.
Men having sex with Robots is a horrible idea. Men will expect women to do the same things as a robot does. This will be a disaster.
To some people, sex is not a natural act. But society has made it so "natural".
The only way we will change, is if the society changes.

"sex is not a natural act" - Could you please expand on that? It's not registering in my mind at all.

Miss aiello...
There are men out there now who expect their women to be like robots.
Mr. dudley.
Think of the puritan's attitude towards sex and you'll get the general idea.

yeah, dildos are the same thing. I don't see this really happening though. I'm thinking robots like that would be really expensive to make/maintain/etc, and unfortunately you can get a real person for less I'm sure. But if it did, it might take some demand out of the human market. Which is a good thing, right?

I dont think it would devalue sex all that much simply because of the context in which the sexual acts take place...
For example...In a long term committed relationship sex will be and should be still seen as just one of the pleasurable ways of connecting with your partner intimatly...
Sex outside of such a partnership shouldnt have that same meaning since presumably you wont be with that person on a regular basis...
My biggest concern however is that, as we make progress in the field of robotics, there will come a day that it can be said that robots will have souls...
At that point, we will be faced with the same moral dilemma that were facing now with human prostitutes.
And as for those of us who are disabled having to pay for sex...
As a disabled man...I wouldnt want to have to do so BUT if I had the money and no other acceptable options...I would...On occasion.

I think it would be great!! If a man doesn't want to take the time to form a bond with a woman and have a relationship before sex, get a robot!
If a man wants to cheat on the woman he has,get a robot!
If a man wants to ****anything just to **** ,get a robot!!
The robot will do anything and will not feel degraded. Many men who get prostitutes do so so they can do things they otherwise can't do at home!! Degrading and disgusting things. Not al men but quite alot of them do.
Men,don't rape,buy women,hurt little girls,get a robot!!

As for a man who can not find a woman or sex and is a good man, keep some women as prostitutes only for them.Let's stop putting down "prostitutes" I really feel sorry for girls who have to do this job for a living. It has to be very hard.Harder than any job that I have ever done. They should only satify decent men who can not find a woman any other way.
As for the rest of the men,get a ROBOT!!!!
